Hike to Tungnath Temple

Tungnath Temple is one of the highest temples in the world and is the highest of the five Panch Kedar temples located in the Rudraprayag district, in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is located near the Chandrashila peak, amidst the beautiful snow-capped mountain. It is accessible by a short trek from Chopta.

From Delhi to the Divine Tungnath Temple:

The distance from Delhi to Tungnath is approximately 450 km by road. One can travel from Delhi, taking route travelling through Haridwar, Rishikesh, Ukhimath. You will reach Chopta in about 10-12hrs.

From Chopta, Tungnath temple is accessible via a 4-5 km uphill trek.
The distance from Haridwar to Chopta is approximately 200 km by road, and generally takes around 7-8 hours to drive.
From Rishikesh, Chopta is around 160 km uphill.

Adventure Trek from Chopta to Tungnath Temple!

The starting point of the trek to Tungnath temple is from Chopta. It’s a short hike of about 4kms. The trail is well-maintained, guarded. The starting is marked by a gate. One have to submit basic information to the forest officers, with some nominal fee. It takes around 2-3 hours to reach Tungnath Temple, depending on your pace. Chopta is part of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. The meadows (locally known as bugyals) around Chopta are lush green in summer. In winter, these meadows turn white, covered by snow.

Best time to go to Tungnath Temple:

The daytime temperatures stays between 10°C and 20°C. The road to Tungnath temple is beautifully lined with blooming rhododendrons. However, as one moves up, one can enjoy snow covered trail during the early months. Clear skies surrounded by snow-capped mountains, makes it ideal for trekking. The temple remains open for pilgrims and trekkers in late April or early May.

July to September: Monsoon

During these months, the area receives heavy rainfall. There are occasional landslides and thus not ideal for trekking.

The Magic of Autumn from October to November!

The Tungnath temple closes after Diwali, so do remember to plan accordingly. However, one can enjoy the crisp, cool air with temperatures ranging in between 5°C and 15°C. You can enjoy the beautiful autumn colors.

Winter’s Embrace: December to March

During these months, Tungnath and Chopta becomes a winter wonderland. The trail gets covered by snow, with temperature falling below 0°C. The temple remains close, and the trek becomes challenging due to snow.

Tungnath Temple opening and closing:

Tungnath temple is open for six months in the year.

Opening: Temple authorities align the opening date with the commencement of the Char-Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand, which typically falls in April or May on Vaisakhi Panchami. The auspicious date is officially decided by the Badri Kedar Temple Committee during the festival of Baisakhi.

Closing: The temple closes after the festival of Diwali (usually in late October or early November), and the priests move the idol to its winter abode at Makkumath, a nearby village. With the Vedic Mantra, the Chal Vigrah Utsav Doli of Tungnath takes to Makku Math after the religious rituals and disintegration of traditions.

Tungnath Temple Timing:

Tungnath temple opens at 06:00 AM, with morning aarti. The gate for morning Darshan opens at 07:00 AM till 12:00 PM. Tungnath Temple remains closed from 12:00 PM to 03:00 PM. Evening Aarti happens around 06:30 PM, with the temple closing around 07:00 PM.

There is no entry fee.

Conquer Chandrashila Peak:

From Tungnath temple, it’s a steep 1.5 km trek to the Chandrashila Peak. The path is narrower, but the views improve with every step. This section typically takes 1-2 hours. From the summit, you get breathtaking views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar Dome, Chaukhamba, and other Himalayan giants. You should have at least a moderate fitness level, as the last stretch is steep.
