Four days is a comfortable length for a first trip to Dubai. It gives you time for the towers of Downtown, the older streets along Dubai Creek, an afternoon in the desert and a day on the coast. This Dubai itinerary for 4 days groups sights by area so you spend less time in taxis, and it uses the metro where it makes sense.

|---|---|---|
| 1 | Downtown Dubai | Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Dubai Fountain in the evening |
| 2 | Old Dubai | Al Fahidi, abra across the Creek, Gold and Spice Souks, Dubai Frame |

If you land late, start with Day 2’s old town walk on a later morning and move Burj Khalifa to an evening when you have more energy.
Day 1: Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and the fountain
Start in Downtown Dubai. Burj Khalifa’s operator, Emaar, describes it as the tallest structure in the world, and its design uses a triple-lobed footprint based on the Hymenocallis flower. Tickets for the observation decks are sold by time slot, so book ahead online, especially for sunset.

Dubai Mall sits at the foot of the tower and is linked to the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall metro station. Spend the afternoon there, out of the heat, and then step outside in the evening for the Dubai Fountain on the lake between the mall and the tower. The shows run in the evening; check the times on the day.

Day 2: Old Dubai, the Creek and the souks
Spend the morning in Bur Dubai, starting at Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Its lanes of old sand-coloured houses with wind towers show what Dubai looked like before the oil boom, and several of the houses now hold small museums, galleries and cafes.

Walk to the Bur Dubai abra station and cross Dubai Creek by abra. RTA says the name comes from the Arabic verb “abara”, meaning to cross, and calls the abra the city’s most traditional mode of transport. The traditional abra runs from Bur Dubai to the Deira Old Souq station, and the fare is AED 1 per passenger, paid in cash. RTA describes the Creek as a 14 km stretch of water dividing Deira and Bur Dubai.

On the Deira side, walk through the Spice Souk and the Gold Souk. Even if you are not buying, the shop windows of gold jewellery are worth a look. Agree on prices before you pay.

In the late afternoon, take a taxi to the Dubai Frame in Zabeel Park. From the top you see old Dubai on one side and the towers of the new city on the other.

Day 3: Jumeirah Beach and a desert safari
Spend the morning on the coast. The public beaches along Jumeirah give you views of Burj Al Arab, the sail-shaped hotel on its own island. Go early in the day in the warmer months.

In the afternoon, join a desert safari. Operators pick you up from your hotel and drive out to the dunes beyond the city. Tours can include dune driving in a four-wheel drive and a camp with dinner, but the details vary, so read what is included before you book. Pick a licensed operator and ask about seat belts and the driver’s experience.

Day 4: Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina
Palm Jumeirah is the man-made island shaped like a palm tree, with a trunk, fronds and an outer crescent. You can see its shape best from above, from a viewing deck or a flight, and you can travel along the trunk by monorail.

In the afternoon, move to Dubai Marina, about 23 km by road from Downtown. Walk along the marina promenade between the towers, then head to the beach at JBR for sunset. The Dubai Tram links the Marina area, and the metro Red Line runs nearby.

If you would rather spend the last day out of town, Abu Dhabi is within reach for a day trip. Our guide to Ferrari World on Yas Island covers one of the big attractions there.
Getting around Dubai
- Metro: the Red and Green lines cover the airport, Downtown, Bur Dubai, Deira and the Marina area.
- nol card: RTA sells a silver card for AED 25, including AED 19 of credit, and a paper Red Ticket for AED 2 that holds up to 10 single trips.
- Abra: AED 1 per trip across the Creek on the traditional abra, cash only.
- Taxis and ride-hailing apps: useful for the Dubai Frame, Jumeirah and late nights.
Keep your nol card topped up; the same card works on the metro, the tram and buses.
Eating in Dubai
Dubai’s food scene reflects the people who live there, so you can eat Indian, Pakistani, Iranian, Lebanese and Emirati food in the same week. Bur Dubai and Karama have plenty of small, cheaper Indian and South Asian restaurants, and vegetarian food is easy to find there. Around the souks in Deira, look for shawarma stalls and Iranian bakeries. Downtown and the Marina lean towards mall food courts and sit-down restaurants with fountain or water views. For Emirati dishes such as machboos (spiced rice with meat) and luqaimat (sweet dumplings), look for restaurants that list Emirati food on the menu.
During Ramadan, check the current rules on eating in public during daylight hours before you travel.
Where to stay
Downtown Dubai is the most central for this plan, with the metro and Day 1 sights on your doorstep. Bur Dubai and Deira are cheaper and put you close to the Creek and the souks. Dubai Marina and JBR suit a beach-focused stay, but they are farther from the old town.
When to go
Dubai summers are very hot, and summer afternoons are best spent indoors. The cooler months, from late autumn to early spring, are better for walking around the old town and spending time on the beach. Plan outdoor sights for the mornings and evenings whatever the season.
Planning tips
- Dress modestly in the old town, the souks and religious sites; cover shoulders and knees.
- Carry water and sunscreen, even in winter.
- Book Burj Khalifa tickets and the desert safari in advance.
- Keep small change in dirhams for the abra.
- Check opening hours before you go; the Museum of the Future was temporarily closed when we checked.
