Best Time to Visit Europe

Europe has no single best month, because it stretches from the Mediterranean to the Alps and the North Sea. For most travellers from India, late April to June and September to mid October work best: days are long and mild, the big sights are open, and the heaviest summer crowds are either building or have passed. July and August are warm and lively but busy, and winter suits Christmas markets and snow trips. The numbers below come from long-term climate averages published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), with festival dates from official sites.

A few patterns stand out. Rain in Paris is spread fairly evenly through the year, so there is no dry season to aim for. Rome and Athens are dry in summer and get most of their rain from October to December. Zurich, standing in for Switzerland’s lowlands, has frost on winter nights and pleasant highs around 20 to 23 °C from June to August.

Seasons explained

Spring (March to May)

Spring starts cool and warms up quickly. In Paris, average highs go from 12 °C in March to 19 °C in May, and Rome reaches 23 °C by May. This is the season for flowers in the Netherlands, where Keukenhof is open from 18 March to 9 May in 2027, from 8 am to 7 pm every day. April is Rome’s wettest spring month at 81 mm on average, so pack a light rain jacket.

Summer (June to August)

Summer brings the longest days and the warmest weather. Athens averages 34 °C in July and Rome 30 °C, which makes sightseeing at midday hard work in the south. Further north it is gentler: Paris peaks at about 25 °C in August and Zurich at 23 °C in July. Summer is the main season for the Swiss Alps when it comes to hiking and lake trips, and Greek islands are at their sunniest. It is also the busiest time, with families and school holidays across Europe, so flights and hotels need booking early.

Autumn (September to November)

September is often the sweet spot. Rome still averages 27 °C and Athens 29 °C, the sea is warm, and Paris sits at a comfortable 21 °C. October cools off and the south gets wetter: Rome’s average rainfall rises to 113 mm in October and 115 mm in November. By November, Paris highs drop to 10 °C and Zurich to 7 °C, and days are short.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is cold in central Europe, with Zurich averaging highs of 2 to 4 °C and lows below freezing from December to February. It is the season for snow in the Alps and for Christmas markets. Strasbourg, which calls itself the Christmas capital and traces its market back to 1570, holds its 2026 edition from 27 November to 24 December. Vienna’s markets run from mid November until Christmas. The south stays milder, with Rome and Athens at 12 to 14 °C in the day.
